Nook Vs Kindle 3 Review and Comparison

Amazon Kindle and Barnes & Noble Nook are the two serious contenders for the title of best e-reader. There are other electronic reading devices on the market, but Kindle and Nook dominate the scene while the others are fading further into the background. So, this is going to be a straight review and comparison of Nook and Kindle as the two market leaders.

Since the launch of the first models of Nook and Kindle, the enhancements of each subsequent version have brought the two contenders closer. It is harder than ever to make a decision as to whether to buy the new Amazon Kindle or the latest Nook. The two models under scrutiny here are the Kindle 3G (+Wi-Fi) and the Nook (Wi-Fi +3G).

Any attempt to compare and contrast Amazon's Kindle 3 and B&N's Nook is bound to highlight their similarities rather than underline any differences. The two e-readers are the same size to within a fraction of an inch. They are the same weight to within a couple of ounces. The battery life of each of them is 10 days of reading.

The Manufacturers' refinements to these two devices have made it very difficult to place either brand in top place. People looking to buy an e-reader have been swayed first towards the Kindle, then towards the Nook and back again. The competition is closer than ever with the two models we are looking at today. It is simply not possible to say that one is obviously superior to the other. So how do you decide on a winner in the Nook vs Kindle battle?

The selection of an e-reader is very much a matter of personal choice. The best way to approach a review of Amazon's Kindle 3 and the Barnes & Noble Nook is to consider how you will use a reading device. How much do you read, what do you read, where do you read? With a clear idea of the way you want to use the reader, you can make a choice on the basis of the following features of each device.

1. International travel. Do you want to be able to download reading matter overseas? The Nook only works within the United States. The Kindle 3 enables you to download books in over 100 countries via GSM network. You can, however, use both of them anywhere in the world to read books you have already downloaded.

2. Weight. The Kindle 3 is lighter (and slightly smaller) than the Nook. The difference is only a couple of ounces, but this might be important to you if you travel a lot.

3. Navigation. The Kindle has push button navigation only. The Nook has touch-screen navigation. Which makes you more comfortable?

4. Memory size. The Kindle 3 can hold up to 3,500 books. The Nook can hold up to 1,500 books. (However, the Nook has an expansion slot to expand the memory if you want to.)

5. Color screen. One other notable difference between the Kindle and the Nook is that the latter offers a color screen. This might not seem of great benefit in a reader, but this feature might be something you would prefer.

Either of these devices will prove to be excellent value for money. The ongoing competition between the two manufacturers has ensured that the quality of the products keeps going up while the prices are kept down. The choice is yours, and you can't lose.

E Book Reader Comparison - Color Nook Vs Kindle

Has Barnes and Noble crossed the line? Or, maybe they just moved the line. The brick and mortar book selling behemoth first took on the online book selling Goliath, Amazon, with a head to head clash in the e-commerce book selling platform. Then, when Amazon struck an epic blow in an attempt to control the e-book platform with its proprietary Kindle, B&N struck back with the Nook. Now, it appears to have launched an attack at the Apple I Pad with the new NOOK Color.

The new Color Nook is by far no means a match for the i Pad, but it could pass for one mortar round lobbed in its direction. Visually it resembles an iPad with its simply smooth exterior and 7" touch screen, but a deeper look inside shows us it still remains a high end e-book reader.

BARNES AND NOBLE APPLETON WI

The NOOK Color does have Wi-Fi networking capability with web surfing functionality, but, in the first generation does not have the 3G wireless capability that other e readers have. I will assume that future generations will have this capability. One nice feature built into the Nook is the ability to share what you are reading with friends on Twitter and Facebook. Many websites now have seamless integration between those social platforms. I glad to see it built into the Nook.

Memory has expanded from its predecessors to 8 GB on board with the usual upgrade in volume using a 32GB mini SD chip. There should be enough memory present to keep even the most voracious reader busy for quite a while. With Nooks Lifetime Library feature, you should never have to worry about the lost investment in your electronic library.

Spice up your new NOOK Color with down loadable apps to increase the total functionality of your machine. Play games, upload and view your Microsoft Office documents, change your desk top image, and even share books amongst friends in your social media network. The sharing is limited though; still not as open as the old tree cut version. It does have audio play back from MP3 format; nothing new there.

It does, though, have the capability to play videos in MP4 format and listen to Pandora internet radio. Just make sure you're in a Wi-Fi hot spot; Remember, no 3G. The lines between e book reader and the PC continue to blur.

The new NOOK Color definitely reaches out further than any other reader before. As the i Pad reaches from the other direction will we see a clash for supremacy or some unifying ground where all computing is mobile and all computers can be toted by one hand. I personally believe it will be a long continuous battle with no certain clear winner. There will not be the decisive war like VHS vs. Beta, but more like the war between Apple vs. PC. The front keeps moving back and forth with no clear end in the foreseeable future.

Kindle Versus Nook Comparison

With the advent and growing popularity of e-books, virtually every major electronics company and bookstore has released an e-reader. These e-readers are constantly improved upon and compared to one another. Amazon released the Kindle in 2007 and Barnes & Noble released the Nook in 2009. These are two fantastic e-readers that challenge each other for the spot of best e-reader every year.

Both the Nook and Kindle are available in e-Ink, which is a type of screen that simulates the appearance of paper to reduce eye strain. The Nook also has an LCD version, which displays colour and has reflective technology. The Nook is available for 9 and up, while the Kindle is available for 9 and higher.

Both e-readers offer a highlight option, a note making tool, a dictionary, and a wide array of e-books, but the Nook's selection is less expensive. Along with that, Nook users can lend e-books to friends and family for up to two weeks, while Kindle users cannot.

The Nook offers many features such as a touchscreen, a music player, games, and various other multimedia. Unfortunately, these and other features cause the Nook to run much slower than the Kindle. The Nook is also much bulkier at 11.6 ounces versus the Kindle's 8.7 ounces.

The Nook is a feature heavy, slow running, and inexpensive e-reader with a wide variety of e-books available. The Kindle contrasts as a slim, simple, and speedy e-reader with a small price tag and a fantastic library. When comparing these two e-readers, the decision can be made simply by asking which e-reader acts most like an e-reader.

The Kindle was made specifically and exclusively to allow people to enjoy literature in an electronic format. As it evolved, it led the revolution in e-Ink technology, helping users of the e-reader to reduce eye stress and outside glare. When compared to any e-reader, the Kindle will definitely hold its own. Avid and occasional readers alike can enjoy the size, speed, and everything else that comes with the experience of using the Amazon Kindle.

Ebook Reader Comparison

With all the new ereaders on the market competing with each other, it may help you to review their features through an ebook reader comparison. When Amazon came out with their Kindle wireless reading device, there really were no comparable digital readers on the market, but other manufacturers are now competing for the wireless crowd of readers.

Let us first tackle the two ebook reader versions offered by Amazon. There is the Kindle International version and the Kindle DX. The main differences is the current Kindle DX only has 3G wireless capability in the U.S. whereas the International version is available now in over 100 countries. The Kindle DX also is larger in both screen size and capacity. The DX has a nine inch screen, whereas the normal Kindle only has a six inch screen. The Kindle DX also has a larger memory size and can hold 3,500 books versus only 1,500 books in the Global Kindle.

BARNES AND NOBLE APPLETON WI

A fairly new competitor is the Barnes and Noble Nook ereader. It has a lot of the same features as the Kindle Global version with a few added features. The Nook has Wi-Fi capability, whereas neither of Amazon's Kindle's do not. In addition, the Nook has memory expansion as an option and the ability to share media with friends through their Nook reader or through an iPhone, or iPod Touch, select BlackBerry and Motorola smartphones, as well as Windows or Mac PCs.

Newly released is the Sony Reader Daily edition. Their previous Touch ereader did not have wireless capability so was not really a contender in the ebook reader race. But the Daily now can compete with the best of them offering both 3G and Wi-Fi wireless connection and downloads. It does not have sharing capability like the Barnes and Noble Nook, but does offer an expansion slot and touch screen which Kindle lacks. The only drawback is the current price which is 0 more than both the Kindle Global and Nook.

Running close behind in the race is the latest Irex Digital Reader. Like the Sony Reader Daily, it is priced 0 higher than the Nook and Global Kindle without offering too much in upgrades. It does have a larger screen size at eight inches and access to over 750,000 book titles, but no Wi-Fi. The 3G network is through Verizon with a Gobi chipset for worldwide use.

One important note to mention is content availability. The Amazon Kindle has a closed proprietary format which will always limit your media collection to a Kindle unit. The Nook, Sony Reader and Irex support the ePub open format which will always give your more flexibility for your library collection.

Based on the current choices and what each has to offer, there is no clear winner. It all depends upon what each individual user is looking for in an ebook reader. Do you want a larger size ereader for easier reading or ability to download books when on vacation in France? Think about how often you like to read, where you like to read and how many books you have purchased over the past year. Hopefully this ebook reader comparison will help make your decision a little easier.
